Project Manager

Overview

BIOWEG is looking for a Project Manager to build a first-of-its-kind bioprocessing facility. In this role, you will oversee multidisciplinary design and execution, manage contractors and consultants and coordinate engineering, construction and commissioning activities. You will help expand BIOWEG's production capacity in Germany while maintaining the highest quality, safety and sustainability standards.

If you have experience in project management within process engineering, construction or operations and enjoy working in a startup environment, this position offers the opportunity to scale modern fermentation and advance downstream processing to manufacture ingredients that replace microplastics.

Your Role

• Lead full technical management of an engineering & construction project in high-tech bioprocessing/specialty chemicals/biorefinery
• Oversee all engineering lifecycle phases while meeting quality, cost and schedule targets
• Size and design process equipment, create flow diagrams and equipment lists and manage specifications, testing protocols and project documentation
• Integrate GMP, food and pharma-grade quality expectations into plant design and documentation
• Act as the central technical contact for internal teams and external partners
• Coordinate with suppliers for FAT/pre-FAT, validate equipment performance, and ensure alignment with construction plans
• Drive cross-functional integration across process, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, civil, and automation systems
• Establish and continuously improve design and engineering workflows, quote structures, reporting cadences and change management
• Define site personnel profile and internal resourcing
• Lead risk identification and mitigation throughout execution; report progress, budget and risk status
• Ensure coherent commissioning, qualification and start-up plans
• Align EHS/HSE and compliance (GMP principles, food/pharma grade standards)
• Support SOPs, training and handover to Operations for steady-state production

Your Profile

• Degree in Mechanical, Process, or Chemical Engineering (or comparable technical field)
• Several years managing complex industrial capital projects (EPCM/EPC or owner's team) with demonstrated delivery of design, build and commission
• Solid knowledge of chemical plant / bioprocess facility engineering and project implementation
• Hands-on experience with 3D model reviews, P&IDs, technical specs & documentation and cross-discipline PID-coordination
• Strong interfaces management across process, utilities, packaging, warehousing and site infrastructure
• Working knowledge of fermentation and downstream unit ops: centrifugation, filtration, evaporation, drying, packaging, warehousing
• Proven leadership, stakeholder communication and a calm, structured approach under time/complexity pressure
• Excellent English skills; German proficiency is a plus
• Experience with permitting, ATEX, pressure equipment and utilities
• Familiarity with capex stage-gate models and project controls (budgeting, scheduling, risk, cost reports)
