The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. For some time now, Fraunhofer ISE has been pursuing the approach of using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a raw material for the chemical energy storage of hydrogen (H2) ("Carbon Capturing and Utilization"). CO2 is to be captured from the air, from biomass or from existing industrial processes such as steel or cement production and converted into storable and transportable energy sources and chemicals with sustainably produced H2 in various synthesis processes. In contrast to established fossil-based paths, such Power-to-X (PtX) processes are potentially sustainable. At Fraunhofer ISE, we evaluate the PtX processes with the help of a holistic system approach, which includes not only economic assessments but also the analysis of environmental impacts via a life cycle assessment. The aim of your work is to further develop a GIS-based model for evaluating the suitability of sites for renewable energies and Power to Liquid (PtL) plants. This involves identifying restricted areas and evaluating suitable sites based on the availability of existing infrastructure and other technical, economic and environmental aspects in order to pave the way for the planning and implementation of specific plant concepts. During your 6-month employment, you will be part of an interdisciplinary and motivating team and gain exciting insights into the world of hydrogen research. We are looking for a student assistant for our "Sustainable synthesis products" department to start as soon as possible. **What you will do** - You will select and weight suitable evaluation criteria for the site selection of renewable energies and link them to suitable GIS datasets. - You will determine a comprehensive compilation of relevant location factors, their weighting and suitable georeferenced data sets for the production of various synthetic energy sources, fuels and chemicals. - You will further develop a model for a GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis in QGIS and transfer the process steps into a Python script. - You will develop a methodology for estimating the maximum electricity and hydrogen production volumes within identified areas. - You will present your interim results in regular internal meetings. **What you bring to the table** - You have experience in dealing with geodata and programming using the programs QGIS and/or Python. - Ideally, you have already gained experience with renewable energies, hydrogen and power to liquid products. - It is important to you to get involved in your team and to achieve goals together in interdisciplinary cooperation. - You plan and complete tasks independently and with high quality. - You formulate your ideas clearly and listen attentively to others. - You can express yourself confidently in English and understand technical literature. **What you can expect** - You will work at one of the most popular employers on an equal footing with the best. - Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talent into their ranks. - We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to work from home at times. - We also foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication. - We value equal opportunities and make room for diversity. - You can take part in attractive sports and health programs and after-work activities.
