Director of European Strategies

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a full-time Director of European Strategies in our Berlin, Germany office.

**Who are we?**

**The Position**:
The Director of European Strategies leads IATP’s two-person office in Berlin. The program works on the intersection of EU climate and food policies, in particular, policies directed at animal agriculture and land use. The Director works closely with the Berlin-based Policy Officer for Climate and Agriculture to set policy priorities. The position also coordinates closely with IATP climate staff based in the U.S. and works collaboratively with all IATP program staff. The Director carries out research and writing, and engages with public institutions, civil society and the media in EU policy debates, with some work also directed to multilateral institutions. The Director reports to the Executive Director.

Position type: full-time, indefinite contract

**Responsibilities**:

- Analyze and report on European policies that intersect with agriculture and climate change.
- Produce accessible communication materials targeted to policymakers, civil society and the media.
- Set program priorities for IATP’s work in Europe, in close consultation with the Policy Officer for Climate and Agriculture.
- Connect European policy debates to international advocacy focused on climate, trade and agroecology.
- Build, coordinate, strengthen and mobilize diverse coalitions working toward shared goals and objectives.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with partner organizations and intersectional networks, including frontline/grassroots groups, NGOs, intergovernmental organizations and government agencies.
- Advocate for decision-makers to act on specific policies.
- Represent IATP in public forums in the EU and globally.
- Serve as expert source for media outlets.
- Engage with funders, write funding reports and proposals.
- Oversee budget and administration of small office.

**Qualities and Qualifications**:

- Committed to the mission and values of IATP.
- Demonstrated expertise in climate, food and agriculture policy advocacy in Europe and internationally.
- Minimum five years of experience working with NGOs to advance social, environmental and/or economic justice.
- Familiar with the operation of EU institutions, EU policymaking and EU agriculture and climate policies, including the Common Agricultural Policy.
- Experience working within civil society coalitions or networks.
- Comfortable in intercultural contexts and working in interdisciplinary teams.
- Excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including experience engaging with the media.
- Experience fundraising.
- Understand how to use statistical and other data sources to support analysis.
- Abundance of creativity and enthusiasm.
- Excellent English language skills are required. Additionally, competency in other relevant languages would be highly valued.
- Must have prior authorization to work in Germany.

**Physical Requirements**:

- The position will be based in Berlin and follow a flexible hybrid schedule.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to travel regularly, mostly to EU destinations, as well as internationally.

**Compensation**:
Compensation for this position is based upon qualifications and experience, with a target starting annual salary of 60,840 - 70,200 euros + a generous benefits package.
