The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Faculty of Natural Sciences III, Institute of Agricultural and

Nutritional Sciences, Chair of Plant Nutrition, is seeking at the earliest possible date until 31. December 2027

to fill the position of a

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (m-f-d)

in full-time.

The salary will be up to Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, if the personal requirements and tasks are fulfilled.

**Tasks**:

- Work on the research project “NITROG_RE_EN - Establishment of nitrogen-fixing associations to optimise

productivity with reduced resource use in cereals’ in the project network ‘VALUE PLANT - Plant-derived

valuable substances and optimisation of crop productivity’. The supply of mineral nitrogen is a limiting

factor for crop productivity. The industrial synthesis of nitrogen fertilisers is energy-intensive and a major

source of agricultural CO2 emissions. The aim of the project is to characterise and optimise the interaction

of cereals with N2-fixing cyanobacteria using barley as a model.
- Project-specific tasks: Tracking the efficiency of colonisation and symbiosis establishment by confocal

microscopy; quantification of nitrogenase activity by acetylene reduction assay and 15N2 feeding;
investigation of interaction mechanisms by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene deletions; analysis of Ca2+

signalling; conducting a GWAS study to determine the genetic diversity of the interaction potential.
- Project-specific methods: Transformation, genome editing, hydroponic culture, and phenotyping of barley,

cultivation of cyanobacteria, live cell imaging (CLSM), acetylene reduction assays, element analyses, Ca2+

imaging, transcriptome analyses, bioinformatic analyses.
- Preparation and presentation of research results at seminars and conferences
- Preparation of research reports and publications

**Requirements**:

- Completed university degree (MSc degree or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, crop science or a similar

discipline
- PhD in one of these areas
- Excellent knowledge of plant physiology, molecular biology, and cell biology
- In-depth experience with molecular biological, biochemical, and microscopic techniques
- Practical experience in the project-specific methods desirable
- Excellent English language skills (written and spoken)
- High level of intrinsic motivation and ability to work in a team
