The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS in Halle (Saale) is a methodologically oriented Fraunhofer Institute in the material sciences and materials engineering disciplines and is currently offering a topic for Bachelor thesis / Master Thesis. 3D printing processes enable the efficient production of illustrative components to evaluate, for example, component developments and designs. Processes in which polymer-based material systems are printed enable complex geometries and efficient production times. By integrating reinforcing fibers into the polymer materials, not only illustrative objects but also functional, reliable components can be printed. 3D printing with bio-based plastics is also gaining in importance against the background of the need to enhanced resource efficiency. The Fraunhofer IMWS deals with such materials and processes in its "Polymer Applications" department. **What you will do** As part of a thesis, these materials will be investigated with regard to their mechanical behavior and microstructure. In particular, the influences resulting from the processing should be taken into account and clarified causally. For this purpose, corresponding material samples are to be printed / produced and mechanically characterized in tensile and bending tests. In addition, the microstructure of the examined samples will be analyzed by means of X-ray computed tomography. The thesis includes the following subtasks: - Literature review on bio-based plastics for 3D printing processes - Production of samples based on 3D geometry data - Characterization of samples in mechanical experiments and non-destructive X-ray CT analysis - Evaluation of test and 3D image data **What you bring to the table** - Registered as student in an engineering discipline - Previous knowledge in the field of plastics technology and analysis to work on the task - Independent and responsible handling of the task **What you can expect** - Professional support from scientific mentors - An open and friendly work environment - Flexible hours that allow you to balance your studies and on-the-job experience Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
