**The team you'll be part of**
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.
The Bell Labs Fixed Networks Department is looking for a researcher in the field of optical access. The Fixed Networks Department is part of the world-leading Nokia Bell Labs research center and has expert teams located in Antwerp, New Jersey, and Stuttgart. It is the proven innovation engine for next generation Fiber-To-The-x (FTTx) access technologies (i.e., the last mile of the telecommunication network). The team aims to create innovations in communication technologies, resulting in record breaking technology assets with potential to enhance Nokia’s product portfolio.

As part of our team, you will:
- Define creative “out-of-the-box” solutions to complex theoretical and experimental problems (be able to diverge)
- Distil the proper elements and take a strong position towards a single game-changing solution to the original problem (be able to converge)
- Create new intellectual property through patents, simulators, hardware research platforms, and publications in scientific journals and conferences
- Act as prime reference in your field of expertise in close cooperation with Nokia business lines, academia, customers and other industrial partners.
- Work independently and effectively as part of a diverse multi-site team
- Continuously learn, master and create new, leading-edge technological innovations
**Your skills and experience**
You have:
- Knowledge on and affinity with telecommunication systems and technologies
- Knowledge on Digital Signal Processing in the field of telecommunication (e.g., equalization, modulation, filtering, error correction, LMS algorithms)
- Experience in an optical lab environment
- Hands-on experience with simulation tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C/C++)
- Knowledge on Passive Optical networks is a plus
- In addition:
- Applicants should hold, or be expected to hold, a PhD in (applied) engineering sciences, physics, mathematics, or an equivalent qualification
- You are a quick learner
- You have a positive and open mindset and have strong drive to succeed
- You are stimulated to conduct research autonomously while contributing to team-oriented projects in a cooperative and expert-rich environment
- You are fluent in English and a good communicator in a multi-disciplinary team
