Tasks We are searching for a research scientist (M/F/diverse) to join our artificial intelligence (AI) team in Berlin. As part of the central pre-development department, our goal is to develop and enable the use of AI in future Continental products. You will work in an innovative team of specialists and students with the goal of a Ph.D. Autonomous vehicles rely on highly accurate and detailed information about their static environment. In today's systems, this is provided by high-definition (HD) digital maps, on which the vehicle localizes itself using GPS and other sensors. For this purpose, the corresponding map material must be curated at great expense and maintained even more laboriously. Incompleteness and errors of the map, divergence of sensors and map or simple GPS shadowing can lead to dangerous malfunctions. The aim of this work is to eliminate or at least reduce the dependence on HD maps and GPS in navigation and environmental perception. This is possible because the traffic domain is highly structured and therefore there is extensive prior knowledge about the possible surrounding structures. Taking this knowledge into account, fused systems for environmental perception are to be developed that aggregate direct but partial observations over time and integrate inferences about the behavior of other road users. For example, the lane topology in intersections is often occluded by other vehicles and cannot be directly perceived by camera systems. However, it can be reconstructed from partial observations while approaching or waiting at the intersection and the behavior of other road users that can be perceived using radar even under optical occlusion. Thus, novel fusion-based systems for environmental perception are to be developed and tested that ultimately allow route control based on steering commands known from today's navigation systems. This means that the systems will no longer be dependent on HD maps, but will be able to navigate with standard definition maps and their lane assistants. In consequence, such a system could then “keep left” and “turn left at the next intersection” just like a human being.
