to investigate effects of experimental ocean alkalinisation enhancement (OAE) treatments on
a) the general water chemistry and
b) the dynamics of potentially pathogenic _Vibrio_ spp. populations.
**Background**
Development and implementation of sustainable negative emission technologies (NETs) are key to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and keep global warming below 2°C. One promising NET is OAE but to date, a sound ecological risk assessment of nearshore OAE is lacking. Against this background, the project DEFINE2 aims to investigate the ecophysiological impact of OAE on ecologically and economically important bivalves in temperate Seas
by using the mesocosm facility on Helgoland. In the framework of the planned experimental campaign of DEFINE2 in 2025, we aim to investigate the effects of OAE treatments on the general water chemistry (e.g. DOC, Nitrogen compounds, total alkalinity), and on the dynamics of potentially pathogenic _Vibrio_ spp. populations (by culture dependent techniques and MALDI-TOF).
