You will be part of the group »Test and Method Development« at our site in Bremerhaven. At present, our team consists of five research associates. With the foundation of the working group »Sustainable Maritime Mobility«, a close cooperation between the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences and the Fraunhofer IWES is being established under joint management. The teams in Leer and Bremerhaven work closely together to focus on wind propulsion systems, design concepts and scientific studies for emission-free shipping. **These duties await you...**
Based on an existing rotor design, you investigate the key factors that limit the maximum rotor height when upscaling Flettner rotors. For this purpose, you will determine the mechanical loads acting on the main subsystems of the rotor during operation. Based on this, you will then examine possible failure mechanisms and evaluate the necessary design changes to mitigate them. Special attention is given to the bearings used and the composite material of the rotor shell. Safety aspects such as fatigue strength, buckling and natural frequencies are also analyzed. Tools such as Siemens NX, Bearinx-online, Adams and Ansys will be used for handling these tasks. Additionally, you develop a cost modelling approach to consider economic viability as a limiting factor. In this way, a well-founded understanding of the technical and economic limits as well as potentials of Flettner rotors of different sizes is to be achieved.

The internship is limited to 3 months, individual agreements are possible. There is an option of extension as a student assistant with the possibility of completing a thesis. During an internship, the working time consists of 39 hours per week. In case of a student assistantship, the working time consists of up to 80 hours per month. In the case of an internship, remuneration is based on the federal government guidelines for intern salaries. In the case of a student assistantship, remuneration is based on the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
