**Duties**: - Manage and treat critically ill, injured, and hospitalized military working dogs as directed. - Perform complicated technical procedures involving diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing, and patient care. - Assist in specialized orthopedic, neurologic, and soft tissue surgical procedures to include pre - and post-operative care. - Provide emergency life saving treatments and procedures on military working dogs as directed. - Operate anesthesia for complicated surgical and critically ill patients. - Maintain, operate, troubleshoot, and instruct personnel on diagnostic and patient monitoring equipment for routine and specialized patient care. - Manage and coordinate surgery and specialty military working dog schedule and appointments. **Requirements**: **Conditions of Employment**: - Two year trial/probationary period may be required. - Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. - You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. - Applicants must comply with the Exceptional Family Member Program requirements as outlined in the DoD Instruction 1315.19. - This position may require you to work planned and/or unscheduled overtime to meet work requirements. - This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. - This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. - The position requires moderate to heavy lifting of 75-100 lbs. with assistance in the regular performance of duties. - This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel approximately 10% of the time away from your permanent duty station. - This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer. - Work involves walking, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, and restraining military working dogs. - Employee may be exposed to infectious diseases transmissible to humans, bites, scratches, and other injuries from military working dogs. - Employee may be exposed to disagreeable sanitation conditions and exposure to canine excrement and urine, other discharges, and zoonotic agents. - Employee may be exposed to loud noise, ionizing radiation and laser light, and potentially hazardous chemicals. **Qualifications**: **Who May Apply: US Citizens** In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.**Specialized Experience**: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting veterinarian with surgery/surgical procedures; intubating and monitoring patients under anesthesia, pre - and post - operative; performing emergency treatments and procedures; managing hospitalized patients; performing diagnostic testing (laboratory sample preparation) and imaging (x-ray, ultrasound); and restraining patients, placing IV catheter, preparing IV fluid administration, and administering medications to patients ("patients" refers to canine and feline). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). - You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: - Animal Husbandry - Medicine and Dentistry - Safety and Quality Care **Education**: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
