Climate Modeler Position for Earth System Research

We are seeking a skilled Physicist, Mathematician, Computer Scientist or similar to join our Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Oberpfaffenhofen. The successful candidate will contribute to improving climate models and analysis using machine learning and spaceborne Earth observations.
What You Will Be Doing:- You will be working on developing and enhancing ML-based parametrizations for climate models to reduce systematic errors and enhance projection capabilities.
- You will develop data-driven equation discovery methods to learn interpretable and physically consistent equations from high-fidelity datasets.
- You will develop foundation models for selected climate modeling tasks and benchmark them.
- You will develop ML techniques for improved understanding and detection of extreme events.
- You will develop innovative methods to enhance the evaluation and analysis of climate models in comparison to observations.
You will have the opportunity to work with world-renowned experts in Earth system modelling, Earth observations, and machine learning. Our department develops an ML-enhanced version of the Icosahedral nonhydrostatic (ICON) model alongside an evaluation system that supports the comprehensive evaluation of Earth system models.
About the Role:- A Master's degree or equivalent in physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field is required.
- Excellent programming skills in Python are essential.
- Experience in data analysis and climate research is highly valued.
- Fluency in English is necessary for communication with colleagues and collaborators.
