Researcher in Philosophy of Language
vor 2 Monaten
The CRC 1646 is a research initiative funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that explores linguistic creativity in communication from various perspectives. As a research position within this project, you will be part of our research group focused on the philosophy of language and linguistics, specifically on the topic of 'open texture'.
This phenomenon, similar to vagueness, refers to the indeterminacy we encounter when considering whether a predicate applies to a new or newly considered object. For instance, does 'sandwich' apply to burritos, does 'money' apply to bitcoin, or do 'intelligence' and 'creativity' apply to generative AI systems? Our research aims to investigate the nature, grounds, and consequences of this widespread indeterminacy in language.
Our project combines approaches from semantics, pragmatics, and meta-semantics to shed light on the foundational role of open texture in the emergence of linguistic creativity. As a researcher, you will contribute to this effort by developing a research project within the philosophy of language, which will be jointly developed with Prof. Nimtz (Bielefeld) and Prof. Zakkou (Düsseldorf).
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a research project within the philosophy of language, focusing on semantics, pragmatics, or meta-semantics, and aligning with the general research outlook of our project on 'Open Texture'.
- Pursue independent research within the developed research project.
- Collaborate with other researchers within our project, coordinate with Prof. Nimtz and Prof. Zakkou, and participate in the 'Research Group Theoretical Philosophy' at Bielefeld University.
- Co-organize the activities of our project, including workshops and the philosophical 'thinklab' on creativity in general.
- Participate in the activities of the CRC 1646, particularly on a peer level.
What We Offer
We provide a stimulating work environment, opportunities for scientific qualification, and a competitive salary according to Remuneration level 13 TV-L. Additionally, we offer part-time employment (65%), internal and external training opportunities, a variety of health, consulting, and prevention services, reconcilability of family and work, flexible working hours, and a collegial working environment.
We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified researcher with a strong interest in working in a philosophy of language research team. The ideal candidate will have a scientific university degree in philosophy, sufficient familiarity with the state of research in meta-semantics, semantics, and pragmatics, and a clear ability and willingness to pursue research tailored to the international discussion in philosophy. A marked aptitude for conducting independent research, collaborative skills, and competences, as well as a suitable proficiency in written and spoken English, are essential. Preferred experience and skills include an interest in working in a larger interdisciplinary research initiative and a basic knowledge of German or willingness to learn German.
