Research Position in Philosophy of Language

The CRC 1646 is a research initiative funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that explores linguistic creativity in communication from various perspectives.

This research position is part of our research group within the philosophy of language and linguistics, focusing on 'open texture'. Open texture refers to the indeterminacy we encounter when considering whether a predicate applies to a new object: Does 'sandwich' apply to burritos, does 'money' apply to bitcoin, do 'intelligence' and 'creativity' apply to generative AI systems?

Our research project aims to investigate the nature, grounds, and consequences of this phenomenon, combining approaches from semantics, pragmatics, and meta-semantics.

In line with the general aim of the CRC 'Linguistic Creativity in Communication', our project aims to trace the foundational role of open texture in the emergence of linguistic creativity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a research project within the philosophy of language (or linguistics) that pertains to semantics, pragmatics, or meta-semantics, and fits the general research outlook of our project on 'Open Texture'.
  • Pursue independent research within the developed research project.
  • Collaborate with other researchers within our project on 'Open Texture', coordinate with Prof. Nimtz (Bielefeld) and Prof. Zakkou (Düsseldorf) to secure joint research results, and participate in the activities of the CRC 1646.

Requirements:

  • Scientific university degree in philosophy (Magister, Staatsexamen, or some other relevant subject, notably linguistics).
  • Sufficient familiarity with the state of research, as well as with pertinent research methods, in one or more of the following areas: meta-semantics, semantics, and pragmatics, from the perspective of philosophy of language and/or linguistics.
  • Strong interest in working in a philosophy of language research team.
  • Clear ability and willingness to pursue research tailored to the international discussion in philosophy (or linguistics), and aiming at publications in international peer-reviewed publications.
