Doctoral Researcher in Political Communication

About the Position
We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Zurich. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth literature reviews on political communication, political engagement, social media communication, and information flows, as well as new methodologies for studying political phenomena.
- Develop and implement computational text analysis and multi-modal social media analysis to trace and content-analyze political conversations online.
- Plan and execute subprojects within the larger project framework, working closely with the principal investigators.
- Assist in the coordination of data collection processes and contribute to the development of research protocols.
- Analyze data and write scientific articles as part of the doctoral dissertation.
- Present research findings at international scientific conferences.
- Participate actively in the research environment of the Department of Communication and Media Research, including its PhD program.
- Submit a PhD dissertation within the period of appointment.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Communication Studies, Political Science, or a related discipline, with a strong academic record.
- Strong interest in political communication, comparative media research, social media and politics, public opinion, computational methods, experiments, and/or mixed method approaches.
- Proficiency in R and/or Python programming languages.
- Interest in computational social science methods, including Natural Language Processing, computer vision, and/or network analysis.
- Strong command of English, with knowledge of a language related to the project's regional focus (German, Polish) being an additional asset.
- Scientific mindset, ability to work independently, strong affinity for cooperative collaboration, project management skills, and enthusiasm for working in teams.
- Willingness to relocate to Zurich and travel internationally to engage with project-relevant scientific communities.
- Desirable: Previous work experience as a research assistant.
