Strategic Litigation Specialist

TGEU is a member-based organization working primarily in Europe and Central Asia to advance the rights and well-being of trans people. Our mission is to strengthen the rights and well-being of trans people in Europe and Central Asia, and we represent over 200 member organizations in 50 countries.
Trans people across Europe and Central Asia face a range of challenges, including violence, discrimination, and criminalizing practices. We are committed to centering the voices and experiences of trans people in our work to advance their rights and fight against violence and discrimination.
We are seeking a consultant to support our work in strategic litigation and raising legal literacy among the trans community in 2024. The consultant will work closely with our Policy Team, Community Building Team, and Project Manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Key Responsibilities:- Advise TGEU on its strategic litigation strategy
- Implement TGEU's activities to retain and advance legal protection and recognition for trans people under different legal mechanisms, such as the EU, Council of Europe, and UN litigation mechanisms
- Conceptualize, draft, and coordinate written submissions, such as third-party interventions or Rule 9.2 submissions, supporting strategic cases in regional or international mechanisms or before high-level national courts
- Monitor the ECtHR database and collaborate with TGEU's partner organizations
- Support lawyers, paralegals, and activists, including organizing a Trans Legal Network meeting and providing information exchange and communication throughout the year
- Draft a stand-alone publication on jurisprudence
- Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written) and ability to work with French legal text (ECtHR)
- Strong understanding and commitment to trans rights
- Knowledge of the European human rights framework is essential; knowledge of the international human rights framework is desirable
- High sense of initiative and ability to manage stressful situations
- Ability to support complex working processes and intersectional understanding in approach of work
- Highly comfortable with working with a diverse set of audiences and stakeholders
- Ability to meet deadlines and sound ability to work individually and within diverse teams
- Indisputable work ethics and good knowledge of Russian is welcome
A maximum budget of €10,500 (including VAT) is available for these tasks. This sum includes all expenses.
