Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) in Berlin, Germany. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Jia-Jie Zhu on a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) titled "Optimal Transport and Machine Learning".

Research Focus

The PhD project will focus on developing principled optimal transport theory, optimization, and machine learning methods. The candidate will work on the following research areas:

  • Robustness in machine learning and causal inference
  • Optimal transport and gradient flows for machine learning and optimization
  • Probabilistic machine learning and Bayesian inference
  • Continuous optimization for machine learning and mirror descent algorithms
Requirements

We invite candidates with a master's degree in computer science, statistics, or applied mathematics, with a strong background in machine learning or optimization. The ideal candidate should have a solid understanding of mathematical optimization and machine learning concepts, as well as programming skills in Python or other relevant languages.
