The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is seeking to appoint a

Head (m/f/div) of Digital Humanities for a full-time, permanent role, aimed at fostering leadership and innovation within the Digital Humanities team, which comprises three members. This position is pivotal in enhancing collaboration across various units of the institute and with external partners. The integration of digital humanities methodologies is essential to the research conducted at the MPIWG, which has played a significant role in advancing the field for the history of science and the humanities in general. The Digital Humanities division focuses on merging digital techniques with historical inquiry, developing innovative research tools for scholars, and working closely with the Library and Communications teams to ensure sustainable management of digital data.

Key Responsibilities

Support the directors and research group leaders in the design, development, and upkeep of the institute's digital research infrastructure.

Initiate and contribute to original research in digital humanities that aligns with the institute's research objectives.

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of digital humanities projects in collaboration with researchers across the institute's diverse departments and research groups.

Lead a multidisciplinary team dedicated to digital humanities.

Set strategic direction for digital humanities initiatives and coordinate the technical advancement of research projects that incorporate core digital humanities elements.

Foster research partnerships with external institutions.

Candidate Profile

Master's degree in relevant IT fields related to digital humanities; a doctoral degree is preferred.

Three to five years of experience in managing teams or collaborative workgroups.

A proven record of successful projects and publications in the digital humanities domain.

Extensive familiarity with agile software development practices.

Demonstrated experience in designing and overseeing digital historical research projects.

Experience applying machine learning and/or data science techniques within the humanities.

Strong programming capabilities and a willingness to engage in technical development (e.g., Python, JavaScript, SQL / SPARQL).

A comprehensive understanding of digital tools and technologies pertinent to digital humanities, particularly in the context of the history of science, technology, and knowledge.

Ability to remain informed about the latest technologies and methodologies in digital humanities and related fields such as data science and software engineering.

Capability to develop and implement digital infrastructure and resources for the institute.

Familiarity with German and international funding bodies.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in an interdisciplinary environment.

Proficiency in English; good German language skills or a willingness to learn.
