The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is seeking a full-time, permanent Director of Digital Humanities (m/f/div) to oversee and guide a dedicated team of three professionals. This role is pivotal in driving innovation and collaboration across various departments within the institute and with external partners. The integration of digital methodologies into historical research is a cornerstone of our mission, and we are committed to advancing the field of digital humanities.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the leadership and research teams in the design, development, and upkeep of the institute's digital research infrastructure.
  • Initiate and engage in original research within the digital humanities framework, aligning with the institute's research objectives.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and successful delivery of digital humanities projects in collaboration with researchers across multiple departments.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team focused on digital humanities.
  • Set strategic direction for digital humanities initiatives and coordinate the technical advancement of related research projects.
  • Foster research partnerships with external institutions.
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master's degree in relevant IT fields related to digital humanities; a doctoral degree is preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in team management or leading working groups.
  • A proven history of successful projects and publications in the digital humanities sector.
  • Extensive knowledge of agile software development practices.
  • Experience in designing and managing digital historical research initiatives.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and data science applications in the humanities.
  • Strong programming capabilities and a willingness to engage in technical development (e.g., Python, JavaScript, SQL / SPARQL).
  • A comprehensive understanding of digital tools and technologies pertinent to digital humanities, particularly in the history of science, technology, and knowledge.
  • The ability to remain current with emerging technologies and methodologies in digital humanities and related fields.
  • Experience in developing and implementing digital resources and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of German and international funding bodies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills suitable for an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Proficiency in English; good command of German is advantageous (or a willingness to learn).
