Position Overview:
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is seeking a full-time, permanent Head (m/f/div) of Digital Humanities to oversee and guide our Digital Humanities team, which consists of three dedicated members. This role is pivotal in driving innovation and collaboration both within the institute and with external partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support directors and research leaders in the development and maintenance of the institute's digital research infrastructure.
  • Initiate and contribute to pioneering digital humanities research aligned with the institute's research agenda.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of digital humanities projects in collaboration with various departments and research groups.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team focused on digital humanities.
  • Set strategic direction for digital humanities initiatives and coordinate technical development across projects.
  • Foster research collaborations with external institutions.

Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A Master's degree in relevant IT fields; a doctoral degree is preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in team management or working group leadership.
  • A proven track record of successful projects and publications in the digital humanities domain.
  • Extensive experience with agile software development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and managing digital historical research projects.
  • Experience applying machine learning and/or data science techniques to humanities research.
  • Strong programming skills and a willingness to engage in technical development (e.g., Python, JavaScript, SQL/SPARQL).
  • A comprehensive understanding of digital tools and technologies relevant to digital humanities, particularly in the history of science, technology, and knowledge.
  • The ability to stay current with emerging technologies and methodologies in digital humanities and related fields.
  • Capability to develop and implement digital infrastructure and resources for the institute.
  • Familiarity with funding institutions in Germany and internationally.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Proficiency in English; good German language skills or a willingness to learn.
