Head of Division in Cancer Epidemiology Research

vor 3 Monaten

Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum DKFZ Vollzeit

Our mission at the German Cancer Research Center is to strive for a future free from cancer. We delve into the mechanisms of cancer development, identify risk factors, and explore innovative prevention strategies. Our work is meaningful and exciting, whether in research, administration, or infrastructure.

Position: Head of Division in Cancer Epidemiology

We seek a distinguished scientist with a remarkable international reputation, recognized as a leader in the field of cancer epidemiology. The ideal candidate will engage in groundbreaking and innovative research at the forefront of cancer epidemiology, focusing on lifestyle, social, and molecular factors that influence public health and cancer risk.

The new division head will enhance and develop effective methodologies in epidemiological research to uncover causes and risk factors associated with significant cancer types, contributing to the overall tumor burden. Candidates should have a proven track record of leading innovative research programs within large prospective international cohorts and consortia, addressing fundamental questions regarding cancer incidence, early detection, and survival rates.

The successful applicant will initiate interdisciplinary collaborations both nationally and internationally, conducting large-scale retrospective and prospective studies that aim to identify and mitigate cancer risk factors. Expertise in epidemiology concerning therapeutic outcomes is also expected.

Participation in the NAKO Health Study, the largest population-based, multi-center, long-term study in Germany investigating widespread diseases, including cancer, is anticipated. The division will be integrated into the program "Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention" at the German Cancer Research Center and the National Cancer Prevention Center in Heidelberg, which is being established in collaboration with the German Cancer Aid.

This division will benefit from an exceptional research environment at the DKFZ, encompassing a wide array of cancer epidemiology and prevention, cancer-related biomarkers, cancer biology, data science, physics, biomedical engineering, and clinical translation.

The DKFZ collaborates with the cancer information service, reaching millions of users annually. You will have access to extensive research networks, including the German Cancer Consortium, the National Center for Tumor Diseases, and other national and international research alliances.

This tenured position at the level of a DKFZ Division Head will be supported by attractive core funding for personnel, consumables, and investments, along with access to competitive intramural funding programs.

We are looking for a candidate with proven leadership capabilities, adept at mentoring and supervising junior researchers, fostering an inclusive research environment, and taking on leadership roles in strategic programs.

Recruitment requirements include a PhD in life sciences and/or an MD. We encourage applications from candidates with outstanding academic qualifications, an internationally recognized publication record, successful acquisition of competitive funding, and teaching experience.

Interested candidates should submit a comprehensive PDF file containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates, a publication list, a summary of past research and future plans, an overview of international research experiences, and contact information for three references.

  • A supportive research environment at the DKFZ and NCPC, with opportunities for national and international networking.
  • Modern infrastructure and core facilities.
  • Compensation aligned with the German W3 score equivalent.
  • 30 days of vacation annually.
  • Options for mobile and part-time work.
  • A family-friendly work environment.
  • Subsidized travel options.
  • Administrative support for grant applications.
  • A holistic approach to employee well-being through our Corporate Health Management Program.
