Position Overview

Master's Thesis Topic: PREPARATION OF FLUORESCENT CARBON-BASED QUANTUM DOTS FOR SENSING

The research group on "Structure Formation" at INM investigates the assembly of molecules, polymers, and colloidal particles into materials. We delve into the fundamental processes of structure formation and leverage these insights to create novel materials. Our studies focus on how the characteristics of composite and hybrid materials are influenced by their microstructures and the methods to modify them. We systematically explore variations in size, geometry, chemical composition, and arrangement of material constituents.

Carbon quantum dots (C QDs) represent a new class of zero-dimensional carbon materials, characterized by sp2- or sp3-hybridized carbon domains and various surface coatings. Their ultra-small dimensions (below 10 nm), straightforward synthesis, eco-friendliness, and high luminescent efficiency position C QDs as promising optical materials for diverse applications.

Your Responsibilities
  • Synthesize fluorescent carbon quantum dots (C QDs)
  • Conduct comprehensive characterizations (structural and morphological) of C QDs
  • Optimize the optical properties of C QDs
  • Develop fluorescent composites incorporating C QDs
  • Utilize the synthesized fluorescent quantum dots in sensor applications
Your Qualifications
  • Academic background in chemistry, materials science, or optical materials
  • Experience with wet chemical synthesis techniques
  • Genuine interest in optical materials
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, with a strong command of the English language; proficiency in German is advantageous but not mandatory
