The Role
We are seeking a Senior Packaging & Print Engineer for our Packaging Development team.
This role serves as the primary contact for all packaging developments, regulations, and material qualifications. You will lead packaging innovations, including the development and qualification of new materials, formats, and suppliers, to deliver compliant packaging solutions that meet consumer needs. You will develop and provide guidelines for execution teams to ensure our packaging adheres to the regulations of various operational countries. You will coordinate and execute machine run ability trials and pack format acceptance tests.
You will lead and coordinate technical packaging feasibility studies, complex developments, and marketing initiative projects from the initial brief through the development stages of packaging solutions until the final product launch. The ability to plan, coordinate, visualize, and implement technical solutions is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a liaison between central functions, procurement, manufacturing, marketing, machine suppliers, and material suppliers.
- Design and develop new packaging formats, including conducting patent checks and qualifying all necessary materials and specifications.
- Oversee complex packaging projects from conception to full implementation and operational status.
- Create measurement sheets, grid nets, and NTM specifications.
- Manage the master drawing database.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, machinery, and supplier capabilities to ensure the delivery of cost-effective solutions.
- Lead and support multiple packaging development projects concurrently, including their implementation.
- Conduct structured troubleshooting on new and existing generations of packaging machines, particularly focusing on the machine-material interface.
- Optimize the machine/material interface.
- Coordinate and establish physical measurements for packaging materials.
- Monitor competitor activities regarding new packaging and packaging solutions.
- Assist the internal engineering team on machine projects by specifying all packaging-related areas, approving format-specific drawings, ordering materials for machine run-ups, and ensuring that the run-in process operates as planned.
- Manage projects and stakeholders for complex packaging programs.
- Demonstrate strong project management skills.
Skills & Requirements
- A technical university degree or equivalent in packaging or a related technical field.
- A minimum of 10 years of practical experience in a technical role.
- Knowledge of chemical engineering or plastics technology is advantageous.
- High awareness of high-speed packaging lines, their functions, and interfaces.
- Extensive experience in troubleshooting the machine-material interface on high-speed packaging lines.
- Strong technical knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and packaging machinery.
- Excellent project management and communication skills, along with strong stakeholder management abilities.
- Good understanding of design principles, packaging construction, and knowledge of packaging materials (primarily cardboard and flexible materials) and machinery.
- Proficient in MS Office and familiar with AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Proficient in English; knowledge of German is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration in diverse cultural contexts.
- Flexible, reliable, and detail-oriented, even in high-pressure environments.
- Willingness to travel (up to 30%).
