The Role
We are seeking a Senior Packaging & Print Engineer for our Packaging Development team.
This role serves as the primary contact for all packaging developments, regulations, and material qualifications. You will lead packaging innovations, including the development and qualification of new materials, formats, and suppliers, to deliver compliant packaging solutions tailored to consumer needs. You will also develop and provide guidelines for execution teams to ensure our packaging adheres to the regulations of various operational countries. Additionally, you will coordinate and execute machine run ability trials and pack format acceptance tests.
You will lead and coordinate technical feasibility studies for packaging, manage complex development projects, and oversee marketing initiatives from project inception through to the launch of packaging solutions. Strong planning, coordination, visualization, and implementation skills are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the liaison between central functions, procurement, factories, marketing, machine suppliers, production, and material suppliers.
- Design and develop new packaging formats, including conducting patent checks and qualifying all necessary materials and specifications.
- Lead intricate packaging projects from concept to full implementation and operational status.
- Create measurement sheets, grid nets, and NTM specifications.
- Manage the master drawing database.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, machinery, and supplier capabilities to ensure cost-effective solutions.
- Oversee multiple packaging development projects simultaneously, ensuring successful implementation.
- Conduct structured troubleshooting for both new and existing generations of packaging machinery, focusing on the machine-material interface.
- Optimize the interaction between machinery and materials.
- Coordinate and establish physical measurements for packaging materials.
- Monitor competitor activities regarding new packaging solutions.
- Support internal engineering on machine projects by specifying all packaging-related areas, approving format-specific drawings, ordering materials for machine run-ups, and ensuring the process runs smoothly.
- Manage projects and stakeholders for complex packaging programs.
- Demonstrate strong project management skills.
Skills & Qualifications
- A technical university degree or equivalent in packaging, packaging production, or technical project management.
- At least 10 years of practical experience in a technical role.
- Knowledge of chemical engineering or plastics technology is advantageous.
- High awareness of high-speed packaging lines, their functions, and interfaces.
- Extensive experience in troubleshooting machine-material interfaces on high-speed packaging lines.
- Strong technical knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and machinery.
- Excellent project management, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Good understanding of design principles, packaging construction, and knowledge of packaging materials (primarily cardboard and flexible materials) and machinery.
- Proficient in MS Office and familiar with AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Proficient in English; knowledge of German is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of working in diverse cultural contexts and demonstrating teamwork capabilities.
- Reliable, accurate, and flexible, even in high-pressure environments.
- Willingness to travel (up to 30%).
