PhD Research Associate

Within the framework of the Research Training Group "Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes," under the Faculty of Biology and the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO), this position is available for a duration of three years, contingent upon the absence of prior qualification periods. The role is part-time, comprising 65% of standard working hours, with compensation and benefits aligned with public service standards in the State of Hesse, Germany (TV-H E13, 65%).

This Research Training Group, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), focuses on the biology of nucleotides and their derived cofactors across various microbial species, aiming to elucidate the mechanistic foundations of nucleotide-dependent biological functions.

The research group investigates bacterial model systems, emphasizing chromosome segregation, cell division, cytoskeletal dynamics, and cell cycle regulation. The project titled "Nucleotide-regulated Dynamics of DNA Partitioning CTPases" explores the molecular mechanisms governing bacterial chromosome and plasmid segregation via the ParAB_S_ system, a conserved functional module responsible for distributing newly replicated DNA to daughter cells during bacterial division. This project will employ a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, integrating molecular biology, fluorescence imaging, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and bioinformatics. The findings are expected to enhance our understanding of bacterial cell organization, potentially informing future synthetic biology applications or the development of novel antimicrobial agents.

  • Design and develop an original research project with a high degree of independence
  • Conduct in vitro functional and structural analyses of nucleotide-binding proteins involved in bacterial DNA segregation
  • Utilize PALM microscopy and single-molecule tracking for in vivo analysis of protein localization and dynamics

This position is limited to a timeframe deemed appropriate for completing a doctoral degree. The role offers substantial opportunities for independent scientific research necessary for doctoral completion, in accordance with § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

  • Master's degree or equivalent in biology or biochemistry from a recognized university or higher education institution
  • Strong foundation in molecular (micro)biology
  • Experience in sterile handling and, ideally, genetic manipulation of bacteria
  • Proficiency in molecular biological (cloning) and biochemical (protein purification) techniques
  • Interest in cell biological methodologies, including advanced fluorescence imaging techniques
  • Self-motivated, independent thinker with a passion for scientific inquiry
