Responsibilities Overview

As a Principal Controls Software Engineer at Medtronic, you will provide essential technical guidance in the development of software that supports both legacy and next-generation robotic surgical instruments. Your role will involve leading teams to develop software solutions that operate on a sophisticated real-time embedded platform, utilizing embedded sensors and actuators to ensure high-bandwidth, precise, and reliable instrument responses. Furthermore, this position will require collaboration with the electromechanical design of surgical instruments throughout all phases, emphasizing control software requirements that align with the testing, verification, and validation of safety-critical systems.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Leading multiple agile teams as the Software Technical Lead to facilitate the development of surgical robotic instrument projects.
  • Overseeing the design of feedback control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink, employing classical PID control laws or advanced control techniques, and refining existing software implementations for released products.
  • Contributing to the ongoing enhancement of verification methodologies.
  • Collaborating with the broader software organization, systems engineering, and validation teams to define and assess software requirements.
  • Serving as an independent reviewer of MATLAB/Simulink models to ensure compliance with quality standards and adherence to proper architecture.
  • Preparing for and participating in design reviews.
  • Documenting or contributing to the documentation of software, including architecture and design details, unit testing, anomaly tracking, and reporting.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in modeling and simulation software, particularly MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Familiarity with multi-body kinematics and dynamics.
  • Experience in designing and implementing position, velocity, and torque feedback controllers.
  • Knowledge of discrete signal processing methods and algorithms.
  • Experience with reduced-order modeling of mechatronic systems.
  • Understanding of techniques for real-time estimation of uncertain parameters.
  • Experience in implementing advanced control algorithms, such as optimization-based control methods.
  • Familiarity with real-time software development on microprocessor-based systems and in a Linux environment.
  • Experience in integrating mechanical and electrical hardware with software.
  • Knowledge of software requirement creation, FMEA analysis, and verification processes.
  • Experience in medical product development processes, including regulatory considerations and safety protocols, with hands-on experience in medical/surgical devices.
  • Background in large organizations with matrix structures, having collaborated with cross-functional teams in an international context.
  • Proficiency in English is required (German language skills are a plus).
  • Experience in prototype-level C++ coding is advantageous.
  • Experience in open-ended robotics research projects is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
