Research Assistant in Heat Pump Systems for Energy Resilience

At the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG, we are dedicated to advancing research in integrated energy systems, geothermal energy, and sector coupling to facilitate a successful energy transition. With multiple locations across Germany, our focus is on applied research that leads to the development of innovative technologies for our clients in both public and private sectors, ultimately aiming to transform these innovations into market-ready products and processes.

Our team at IEG is engaged in the development of sophisticated heat pump controllers designed to bolster the resilience of energy infrastructures. We are looking for a student with a solid foundation in heat pump technologies and their integration into energy systems, alongside expertise in geographic information systems (GIS). The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in data analysis, clustering methodologies, and simulation modeling to assess key performance indicators (KPIs) within energy systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in identifying potential input data for categorizing regions across Germany for heat pump integration.
  • Support the definition of metrics for clustering.
  • Investigate various clustering methodologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Develop and create clusters for diverse distribution grids throughout Germany.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in engineering, energy management, physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of heating infrastructures in Germany.
  • Understanding of heat pump technologies.
  • Interest in energy infrastructures, particularly the integration of heat pumps in sector-coupled systems.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with clustering techniques.
  • Assistance in enhancing existing simulation models.
