Research Assistant in Heat Pump Systems

At the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy IEG, we are dedicated to advancing research in integrated energy systems, geothermal resources, and sector coupling to facilitate a successful energy transition. With multiple locations across Germany, our focus is on applied research aimed at developing cutting-edge technologies for both public and private sector clients, ultimately transforming innovations into viable products and processes.

Our team is currently engaged in the development of sophisticated heat pump controllers designed to bolster the resilience of energy infrastructures. We are looking for a student who possesses a solid grasp of heat pump technologies and their application within energy systems, alongside expertise in geographic information systems (GIS). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong interest in data analysis, clustering methodologies, and simulation modeling to assess key performance indicators (KPIs) within energy frameworks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in identifying potential input data for categorizing regions across Germany for heat pump integration.
  • Support the definition of metrics utilized for clustering.
  • Investigate various clustering techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI) approaches.
  • Develop and generate clusters for diverse distribution grids throughout Germany.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in engineering, energy management, physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with heating infrastructures in Germany.
  • Understanding of heat pump technologies.
  • Interest in energy infrastructures, particularly the integration of heat pumps within sector-coupled systems.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of clustering techniques.
  • Assistance in enhancing existing simulation models.
