Postdoctoral Researcher in Advanced Optical Microscopy for Fertility Studies

In the realm of reproductive health, assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are gaining prominence as they provide essential options for prospective parents facing age-related and lifestyle challenges. Recent advancements in optical imaging techniques, particularly light sheet fluorescence microscopy, have significantly enhanced our comprehension of fertility-limiting processes, enabling visualization at the molecular and cellular levels in mammalian models. However, the application of these technologies in clinical settings to better understand and address human infertility has been hindered by the absence of methods that can transition from the detailed molecular insights provided by fluorescence techniques to the physiological imaging required in clinical environments, which necessitates non-invasive imaging approaches that do not disrupt delicate biological processes.
Our initiative seeks to integrate the various scales of biological and medical research by creating a groundbreaking hybrid microscopy platform. This platform will leverage the molecular specificity of fluorescence microscopy to enhance the informational depth of non-invasive imaging methods. In collaboration with the EMBL Imaging Centre and the research team led by Robert Prevedel, along with the University Hospital of Heidelberg, we aim to merge high-resolution fluorescence light sheet imaging with label-free optical coherence and Brillouin microscopies. These techniques will yield comprehensive morphological and mechanical data regarding embryos. The multimodal datasets generated will be utilized to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-driven models capable of identifying molecular and cellular alterations from non-invasive images alone. This innovative approach will facilitate the establishment of a high-resolution cross-scale imaging platform, bridging the gap between fundamental research and clinical applications, thereby illuminating the previously obscured processes related to infertility.
