Vollzeit
Research Scientist in Agricultural Systems Modelling The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of plant systems, thereby contributing to the advancement of sustainable and resilient horticulture. Our research operates at the intersection of plants, humans, and the environment, addressing critical global challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, urbanization, and food security. We provide scientifically grounded recommendations for healthy agri-food systems and sustainable environmental interactions. We are seeking a passionate and driven Research Scientist in the field of Agricultural Systems Modelling with a focus on innovative phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) cycles.
The successful candidate will join the HORTSYS research group, which is focused on optimizing resource use in crop production within controlled environments. Our research supports environmental management and resource conservation in greenhouses and similar settings.
As part of the EU Horizon Europe project EcoNutri, which aims to enhance fertilization strategies for P and N cycles in agricultural systems, the HORTSYS group coordinates systems modelling and environmental assessments within a consortium of 36 partners across Europe and China.
This role involves the development and implementation of process-based models to analyze key innovations such as:
- Utilization of biogas waste residues as fertilizers
- Cascade hydroponics with nutrient-selective sensing
- Microbial inoculants to improve nutrient uptake
Responsibilities include:
- Developing process-based mathematical models for agricultural systems
- Conducting simulation studies of the developed models
- Supporting life cycle assessments (LCA) in collaboration with project partners
- Supervising undergraduate and graduate students
- Actively participating in the coordination of the EcoNutri project
- Preparing scientific publications and presenting findings to both the international project consortium and scientific audiences
- A PhD with a focus on systems modelling in horticultural or agricultural contexts
- A strong foundation in process-based mathematical modelling of crop production systems
- Proficiency in mathematical analytics and the ability to translate processes into equations
- Experience in systems modelling, particularly with Matlab
- Knowledge or interest in life cycle assessment, preferably with SimaPro
- Excellent organizational and English communication skills
- A proactive, open-minded, and adaptable personality
- A willingness to work in an international environment
- An inspiring and dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art facilities
- Opportunities for career development in high-technology crop production
- Participation in a dedicated and collaborative research team
- Flexible working hours and options for remote work
- Support for local public transport
