Our Optical Communications division has transitioned from merely producing optical fiber and cable, hardware, and equipment to offering a comprehensive suite of leading optical solutions across the wider communications sector. This division is divided into two primary product categories: carrier networks and enterprise networks. The carrier network category primarily includes products and solutions designed for optical-based communication infrastructures that support services such as video, data, and voice communications. The enterprise network category focuses on optical-based communication networks marketed to businesses, government entities, and individuals for personal use.

Position: Application Engineering Manager for Carrier Networks, EMEA (m/f/d)

Location: Berlin, Germany

Role Overview:

The Carrier Networks Application Engineering (AE) Manager is a hands-on managerial role overseeing a team of AEs who act as product and solution specialists for Corning. This team will cultivate strong local relationships with key customer contacts and the ecosystem of agents supporting those customers, including design consultants and installers. The role involves promoting the adoption of new innovations among major clients through extensive technical sales and engineering support while collaborating with internal colleagues in commercial strategic account teams and operations PLM, RDE organizations. The Carrier Networks AE team provides prompt and reliable consultation and support to our customers in the field and serves as a conduit for Voice of Customer (VoC) feedback to internal development and product teams. Additionally, the team offers essential, timely assistance to their Customer Experience counterparts in Core AE, Customer Care, and Deal Desk functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of customer-facing AEs who:
  • Deliver pre-sales customer assistance, including product recommendations, system design, installation training, and testing.
  • Offer post-sales support, including on-site assistance during installation, troubleshooting, and resolution of customer notifications.
  • Provide system solutions, including Bills of Materials and drawings tailored to customer specifications, and complete customer RFIs (Requests for Information).
  • Generate commercial technical documentation and supporting materials as necessary.
  • Design and conduct training programs for Corning solutions.
  • Advise customers (both internal and external) on products and their applications, articulating the benefits and value propositions of Corning solutions.
  • Provide feedback to development/PLM for product enhancement ideas and compliance with regional standards.
  • Analyze competitor products and deliver insights and reports.
  • Contribute technical input to key account business reviews.
  • Facilitate field trials and establish criteria for successful outcomes, tracking and forecasting customer timelines for the adoption of new innovations.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors (Telecom products, tools, software) to ensure compatibility with Corning products, facilitating a successful installation experience for end users.
  • Encourage and drive the development of smart tools using programming skills to enhance task efficiency and process consistency.

As a manager, the candidate will:

  • Guide AE team members regarding task priorities and ensure proper training and capability to fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Prioritize requests from both external and internal sources; monitor team performance metrics through objectives, KPIs, and tools via Salesforce Service Cloud & Field Service.
  • Develop a vision and strategy for optimized processes, leading and managing change to ensure best practices for maximum team efficiency, with a focus on Service Cloud/Field Service for all AEs.
  • Conduct annual reviews and development plans, utilizing coaching and feedback throughout the year; review and approve expense reports and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Foster a cohesive team environment where all employees feel valued and contribute meaningfully.
  • Recruit and onboard new team members or implement workforce reductions as necessary.
  • Maintain frequent collaboration and communication with stakeholders in adjacent functions to ensure effective team operations.

Requirements:

  • University degree in a technical field related to Telecommunications or Engineering; a Master of Business is advantageous.
  • Over 5 years of experience in the telecommunications sector.
  • Strong technical and analytical capabilities.
  • Proven ability to build and nurture customer relationships, understand customer challenges, and resolve issues through collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting to C-level executives, both internal and external, with the political acumen to manage expectations and navigate disappointments.
  • Experience in driving organizational change (people, processes, technology).
  • Established working relationships within Commercial, PLM, and Operations functions (Manufacturing, Development).
  • Language proficiency: Excellent written and spoken English; additional European languages are a plus.

Travel Requirements:

  • 25-35% travel primarily within continental Europe; must be capable and willing to travel throughout the EMEA region, including Israel and Africa. Travel outside the EMEA may also be required for additional support.
  • Flexibility to travel on short notice, which may involve overnight stays.
  • All modes of transportation may be utilized: train, car, bus, ferry, plane.
  • Must possess valid visas or EU citizenship to facilitate unrestricted travel.
  • The candidate must hold a current and valid local driving license with a clean driving record to enable vehicle rentals in other countries if necessary.

Work Schedule:

A minimum of a 40-hour work week, plus travel time as required. Some weekend work or travel may be necessary.
