The Department of Transport and Propulsion Systems at the Institute of Space Systems in Bremen is seeking a student specializing in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics, or a related field to assist in evaluating leakage rates in piping components. This role involves preparing flange connections, establishing experimental setups, and integrating measurement sensors.

The Department of Transport and Propulsion Systems is primarily engaged in researching and advancing technologies for managing spacecraft propellants. Our laboratory in Bremen focuses on the experimental handling of cryogenic propellants, particularly at the temperature of liquid hydrogen (20 K). Effectively managing deep-cold liquid gases in fuel tanks presents unique challenges, and mastering these processes is crucial for the advancement of future aerospace technologies.
As we explore novel propulsion technologies utilizing liquid hydrogen for aviation, we face specific challenges related to the aircraft's fuel distribution system. Given the small molecular size of hydrogen, leakage prevention is a critical safety consideration in the design of pipe connection elements and flange feedthroughs. Consequently, investigations are conducted at DLR's cryolab in Bremen to assess leakage in various pipe components under different thermal and mechanical conditions.
Support is required for laboratory experiments related to these investigations. Utilizing a helium leak detector, you will assess leakages at flange feedthroughs. Additionally, these flanges will undergo multiple heating and cooling cycles to evaluate the impact of temperature fluctuations on leakage rates.
Your responsibilities will include assisting in the setup of experimental arrangements, securing pipelines and fittings, and preparing flange samples for testing, which may involve equipping them with measurement sensors. You will also be responsible for recording measurement data using LabView and conducting evaluations. Independent execution of experiments, including setting investigation parameters such as pressure and temperature, is expected.
Qualifications:- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics, or a related discipline
- Strong understanding of Technical Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
- Willingness to engage with new topics and a capacity for scientific work
- Ability to work independently, structured, and goal-oriented within a team
- Familiarity with programming languages such as LabView or Python is advantageous
- Experience in conducting and analyzing scientific experiments is preferred
