About ESO: The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) stands as a premier intergovernmental astronomy institution in Europe, recognized as the most productive ground-based astronomical observatory globally. Observing Sites: ESO manages three exceptional observing locations in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal, and Chajnantor (home to ALMA). The ESO Headquarters is situated in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

Key Facilities: At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the most sophisticated visible-light astronomical observatory worldwide, and will oversee the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is also a principal partner in ALMA. On Cerro Armazones, ESO is constructing the 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become the largest optical telescope globally, with operations fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

Position Overview: The IT Department at ESO in Garching is seeking an International Staff Member for the role of IT Specialist.

Profile I:

The ESO Microsoft Environment is crucial for the overall operational efficiency of the organization, encompassing Active Directory Services, Azure, M365, and Microsoft Teams.

Upon completion of your university degree in computer science or a related field, you will have specialized in Microsoft Technologies. You should possess several years of comprehensive IT experience in managing Microsoft Exchange, client systems, and Windows Servers. Familiarity with Microsoft Intune, Hypervisor management, PowerShell, and backup and recovery solutions is essential.

Your initial responsibilities will include supporting the Microsoft infrastructure alongside the current Microsoft Subject Matter Expert and your colleagues.

Profile II:

The ESO Web serves as a vital communication platform for the organization. Over time, it has developed into a diverse array of static and dynamic content that delivers information, data, and services to ESO staff, the scientific community, and the general public.

After completing your university degree in computer science or a related field, you will have specialized in Web Services and/or Web Content Management Systems. You should have several years of general IT experience in managing Linux/Unix Servers, Web/Application Servers, and configuring monitoring systems. Experience in IT Security, certificates, identity management, and server automation and orchestration is also required.

Your initial role will involve supporting the ESO Web infrastructure alongside the current Web Subject Matter Expert and your peers.

As your expertise and familiarity with ESO technologies grow, you will take on additional responsibilities. Ultimately, you will oversee the evolution of IT Services, considering necessary changes, enhancements, upgrades, or obsolescence. You will define and agree upon regular reviews of IT Services and document these in operational level agreements with internal stakeholders.

Work Style: You will demonstrate an independent and autonomous work ethic, complemented by a collaborative spirit and initial project coordination experience.

Qualifications:

A first-level university degree (Bachelor) in any IT discipline (e.g., Computing) or an equivalent qualification is required.

Language Proficiency:

Proficiency in the English language—both oral and written—is essential. A working knowledge of German and/or Spanish would be advantageous.

Career Structure: ESO's salary framework is based on various career paths that reflect the nature and level of our roles. Each career path consists of two or three grades that further represent experience and performance. The role of IT Specialist falls within Career Path V.
