Key ResponsibilitiesThe Liver Development and Regeneration team, under the guidance of Professor Elke Ober, is looking for a dedicated individual to join our PhD program. The research project will employ molecular biology techniques, zebrafish genetics, and advanced imaging methodologies to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms that guide morphogenetic interactions and cellular communication during liver development.
Candidate ProfileEssential Qualifications:
- Master's degree in life sciences (e.g., Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedicine, Biochemistry) or related disciplines.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with an international and diverse team.

Desirable Qualifications:
- Background in cell and/or developmental biology.
- Experience in microscopy and image analysis.
- Good command of English for navigating the scientific literature.

This is a temporary research project. The Ober group focuses on understanding how a functional liver develops. Our research aims to provide comprehensive insights into the cellular and molecular processes that coordinate the assembly of the complex three-dimensional liver architecture during development and regeneration. We specifically investigate the behaviors of cells and their interactions that facilitate the transformation of hepatic progenitors into the specialized organization of the mature organ, utilizing zebrafish as a model organism.
During liver development, bipotent progenitors differentiate into hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells, forming the biliary ductal network, while endothelial cells concurrently establish the blood vessel network. Recent findings have highlighted critical roles of endothelial cells in the differentiation of both functional hepatocytes and the biliary network. Detailed proteomic analyses have identified several novel candidate factors, including cytoskeletal regulators and extracellular matrix components. This PhD project will explore the molecular and cellular functions of endothelial cells in establishing a functional liver architecture during development, with a focus on how hepatocytes polarize and connect to the biliary ductal network.
The successful candidate will utilize zebrafish genetics and state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, transgenesis), fluorescent in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and advanced imaging methods, combined with quantitative image analysis and statistical evaluation.
The student will receive comprehensive training in molecular biology, zebrafish husbandry and genetics, fluorescence microscopy, and computational image analysis.
The Ober group is an interactive and dynamic team within the Division of Developmental Biology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The university and its affiliated institutes offer an exceptional research environment for development, cell biology, and regeneration, equipped with all necessary facilities for this ambitious research initiative.
Salary will be aligned with TV-L E13, at 50-65% depending on experience, for a duration of three years.
