Postdoctoral Researcher in "Political Economy of Climate Policy" (m/f/d)
in the domain of political economy, climate policy, environmental economics, and development economics, as part of the project "GeoClimRisk: The Geopolitics of Climate Change-Linked Risks & Transformations."
This position is funded for a duration of 2 years, with remuneration aligned with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a full-time role requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week.
The successful candidate will engage in a collaborative research initiative led by Prof. Dr. Jan Steckel, which aims to explore the political economy of climate change-related risks and transformations. The candidate will closely collaborate with the "Climate and Development" working group at MCC.
Expected contributions include:
- Conducting scholarly research on the political economy of climate policy in low- and middle-income nations (e.g., India, Indonesia, among others),
- Employing qualitative or quantitative methodologies to evaluate political economy obstacles to climate policy, including vested interests, corruption, public acceptance, and political resistance,
- Investigating governance issues related to energy transition minerals, coal mining, coal plant decommissioning, and equitable energy transitions (including JETP Agreements),
- Presenting findings at academic conferences and publishing in prestigious peer-reviewed journals,
- Assisting in the supervision of doctoral candidates and contributing to grant proposal writing.
Applicants should possess a PhD in political science, sociology, environmental or development economics, or related disciplines.
Additional requirements include:
- Willingness to travel (including fieldwork) to regions outside Europe,
- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R or Python),
- Familiarity with discourse analysis utilizing large language models is advantageous.
