Superconducting Magnet Engineer

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH operates one of the foremost particle accelerators dedicated to scientific research. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) project is underway, representing one of the largest international research initiatives.

The Superconducting Magnets & Testing department is seeking a qualified individual to join the Superconducting Magnet Technology group:

Position: Physicist or Engineer (all genders)

This role involves overseeing the production and testing of superconducting magnets.

The production of superconducting magnets will be carried out by industrial partners, with acceptance testing conducted under the auspices of FAIR. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Supervising the design and production phases of superconducting magnets, including factory acceptance testing.
• Coordinating expert reviews for design and production inspections, as well as test programs.
• Approving factory acceptance tests.
• Managing the logistics of transporting magnet components and related materials.
• Overseeing the assembly of magnets and associated systems at FAIR.
• Coordinating site acceptance testing.
• Controlling technical documentation, test protocols, and acceptance records.
• Facilitating communication with manufacturers, transport companies, and relevant departments at GSI.
• Handling all administrative tasks in collaboration with GSI administration.

The ideal candidate will possess:

• A Master's degree in physics or engineering (mechanical, cryogenic, electrical, or electronics) or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience with superconducting magnets and related technical systems, particularly in operational and measurement techniques, with a focus on mechanics, cryogenics, magnetic field measurements, powering, quench detection and protection, electrical testing, and sensors.
• A structured approach to work, demonstrating a high level of proactivity and responsibility, along with strong teamwork skills, autonomy, and the ability to perform under pressure.
• Fluency in English; basic knowledge of German is advantageous.
• Experience in coordinating production and testing activities.
• Proficiency in MS Office tools.
