The Hertie School in Berlin prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. We are looking for a **Teaching Assistant - Advanced Economics** (gn), part-time (6.7 hours per week), to start 01 August 2024.
The course discusses a selected set of policy relevant topics in applied microeconomics. We cover theoretical tools for optimal policy analysis as well as empirical methods for establishing causal relationships. Starting from evidence on income inequality (top income shares), the first part of the class discusses redistributive policies, in particular income taxation (and labour supply/tax evasion decisions), welfare programmes/universal basic income, and minimum wage regulations. We analzye (and quantify) responses to these policies and dicuss welfare implications. The second part of the course focuses on corrective policies in the context of externalities. Moving beyond conventional Pigouvian responses to externalities (e.g., CO2 taxation), we explore nudges and “behaviorally informed” policy responses to ex
- and internalities (e.g., sugar taxation).
The course is tailored to students with some prior knowledge in economics. It focuses on Micro-policies that affect individual and household decision making. We will not cover Macroeconomic questions and hardly discuss the choices of firms.
Your tasks:
- Teaching 4 weekly 90-minute labs every second week (total teaching load: 6 x 4 labs);
- Student support (incl. office hours);
- Grading support and proctoring of the mid-term exam.
Your profile:
- A strong background in economics (students at the Master‐ or PhD‐level);
- Excellent English language and pedagogical skills;
- You should be able to explain key concepts in Public/Labor Economics and Applied Micro to highly motivated and hard‐working students with little mathematical/technical knowledge.
