The Hertie School is looking for a

**Postdoctoral Researcher - Foreign Climate Policy of Germany (f/m/div)**

full-time (40 hours/week).

The contract shall commence as of 01 April 2023 and is limited to 36 months.

You will be working with Prof. Christian Flachsland and a team of dedicated social scientists at Postdoc and PhD level, interested in analyzing and designing climate, energy, and sustainability policy. We conduct high-level policy-relevant research and engage in the public debate, benefiting from and contributing to the vibrant climate, energy, and sustainability policy community of Berlin. You will become part of and contribute to the development of the Centre for Sustainability.

You will research the international context of German and EU climate policy as part of the research project ARIADNE. ARIADNE is a BMBF flagship project assembling leading academic institutions in Germany and implementing innovative dialogue formats between science, policy and society to develop high-quality advice on achieving net zero emissions in Germany and the EU by mid-century.

Your tasks:

- Research: You are responsible for research, writing, publishing and communicating ARIADNE deliverables of the Hertie School on German Foreign Climate Policy. In so doing you will advance your research agenda, conduct outstanding international climate policy and governance research, and publish in leading peer-reviewed field outlets. In particular, you will empirically analyse the governance and policy substance of the new German Foreign Climate Policy strategy in the shifting geopolitical context (including coordination among German ministries and with international partners, potential minilateral initiatives and their relation to the UNFCCC process, integration of climate policy with other relevant policy fields including trade in goods and energy carriers in a shifting geopolitical context).
- Stakeholder engagement: The aim of ARIADNE is to offer relevant climate policy advice for decision-makers and society based on high-quality academic research. Your will contribute to organizing various project-related stakeholder events that bring together science, policy-makers, and important stakeholders to discuss international climate policy governance and design options in Germany, the EU and at the international level. You will contribute to policy briefs and dossiers communicating key insights to stakeholders.
- Project management: You will take a leading role in implementing Hertie’s contribution to ARIADNE and coordinate work with our partners.

Your profile:

- Background in political science and/or economics
- A related Ph.D.
- Profound knowledge of international climate and energy policy and governance
- Research skills: proven ability to conduct independent research employing multiple methods (incl. qualitative methods such as interviews, literature reviews, document analysis)
- Project management skills: planning, prioritization, communication, coordination, writing
- You work independently, show initiative, are a team player, are an engaging supervisor and a collaborative researcher
- A solid publication track record is an asset
- German language skills are an asset
