The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work for a sustainable, economic, secure and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. The "Power-to-Liquids" group at Fraunhofer ISE deals with the conversion of "green" hydrogen from renewable electricity into liquid energy carriers ("e-fuels") and chemicals. Sustainable aviation fuels ("SAF") are a particularly important target product in this context, as they can directly replace fossil kerosene and thus significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation. The need for very high energy densities and special physical properties places high demands on alternative propulsion technologies or energy storage systems for aircraft, so that kerosene will continue to be the basis for air transport in the coming decades. At Fraunhofer ISE, an innovative process is being developed to produce SAF from a sustainable raw material, green H2, and to use CO2 as a carbon source via conversion to methanol.
Extensive experimental investigations are planned for the synthesis of methanol to olefins, the first synthesis step to SAF. The studies will provide the basis for scale-up and identify the reaction network in more detail. The experimental work includes the construction and commissioning of an experimental setup, and the subsequent performance of experiments to study the synthesis.
For our group "Power-to-Liquids" we are looking for a student assistant with the possibility to write a bachelor / master or diploma thesis as soon as possible.
**What you will do**
- You will work on scientific projects to experimentally investigate the conversion of methanol to sustainable aviation fuels.
- You will conduct literature research on synthesis of methanol to olefins, reaction conditions, and state of the art process conversion.
- You will help set up and commission an experimental setup in the lab and at miniplant scale.
- You will help operate and calibrate analytical systems, which include a gas chromatograph.
- You will work your way into the experimental procedures for catalyst characterization and kinetics measurement.
- You visualize and interpret the measurement results.
- You document and present your findings in our group.
**What you bring to the table**
- You are studying chemistry, chemical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable systems engineering or a comparable field.
- Ideally, you have already gained experience abroad.
- Experience with practical work in the laboratory would be desirable.
- You have an affinity for computer-aided measurement data analysis and modeling.
- You plan and complete tasks independently and with high quality.
- You can express yourself confidently in English.
