At the Fraunhofer IWM, 330 employees conduct research on materials and components with the aim of better understanding, developing, processing and using them. In our projects, we bridge the gap between the properties of materials and the durability, safety and function of technical systems.
We show ways and solutions for more energy efficiency and sustainability. After all, materials are crucial for climate neutrality, for the careful use of our planet's limited resources and for the sustainable transformation of our economy.
**What you will do**
Your new workplace will be in our meso
- and micromechanics group. Here, you will complete your Master's thesis in the field of magneto-mechanical material testing using quantum sensors.
A wide variety of tasks await you:
As a part of your Master's thesis, you will prepare micro tensile specimens for measurement, independently plan and carry out series of measurements, evaluate data and provide support in their interpretation. The tests include quasi-static tensile tests, fatigue tests in the high-cycle fatigue (HCF) regime with simultaneous measurement of the generated magnetic field with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). In cooperation with our partners at the Fraunhofer IAF, you will also carry out fatigue tests using diamond-based quantum magnetometry to visualize the magnetic field distribution above the sample surface.
**What you bring to the table**
Your professional background:
You are studying physics, materials science, engineering or microsystems technology and have an interest in applied science. Magnetism in solids or magnetic material testing is a field, that you are already familiar with. You have hands-on experience in laboratories and can easily think your way into experimental procedures. Furthermore, you already have experience in Python and/or Origin and enjoy dealing with data, critically questioning measurement results and adapting measurement procedures.
Qualifications that complement your profile:
You are communicative and not afraid to ask questions or take initiative in collaborations. A good command of English is an advantage. A basic understanding of quantum physics or quantum sensor technology will help you to realize the project, but is not mandatory. Ideally, you have already gained experience in CAD design with Inventor.
