**Director of the Earth System Modelling and Observations International Project Office**
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum GmbH (DKRZ) offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced climate researcher to join the DKRZ team in Hamburg, Germany, a top location for climate research, and lead the set up and execution of a new international project office (IPO) for the WCRPCore Project Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO).
**Objective**
This prestigious post will provide overall support to planning and implementation of ESMO priorities, infrastructure and overall governance and ensure appropriate international leadership, coordination, strategy and communication between ESMO and the other WCRP Core projects and Lighthouse Activities, and other international programmes.
**Responsibilities / Duties**
- Lead and drive the new ESMO-IPO, building and managing the team
- Act as a focal point for the coordination of national and international entities in climate modelling and climate observations worldwide
- Ensure that the ESMO-IPO fulfils its terms of reference under the overall guidance of ESMO Scientific Steering Group and in consultation with the WCRP Secretariat and DKRZ
- Establish and strengthen ESMO partnerships with groups and activities within and outside of WCRP
- Organise and facilitate the sessions of ESMO Scientific Steering Group (SSG) and other ESMO meetings
- Represent ESMO at relevant national and international meetings
- Coordinate the ESMO-IPO contributions to written reports and presentations, including the organisation of relevant workshops and meetings
- Mobilise financial and in-kind resources from various sources to cover ESMO activities and additional ESMO-IPO staff - as well as the administration and management of such resources
- Seek synergies with DKRZ activities and staff
**Skills and Experience**
- PhD in a climate-related discipline, with experience in global climate modelling or global observations for climate
- Good knowledge of WCRP strategic plan, overall structure and activities, and understanding of the ESMO Strategic Plan
- Experience of managing staff
- Experience of managing budgets and producing financial reports
- Experience in working with international organisations within the climate network
- Strong, interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills with staff, scientists and stakeholders at all levels
- Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills combined with exceptional organisational skills
- Experience in attracting funding from various sources
- At least 7 years of relevant work experience
- Willingness and capacity to travel regularly nationally and internationally
- Fluency in English is mandatory. German is a plus
