The “Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies” (EXC 2036) is a research cluster within the framework
of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments. It is a joint project of researchers from many
different backgrounds, including anthropology, archaeology, Asian and Islamic Studies, comparative religious
studies, German medieval literature, history, and theology.

The Cluster of Excellence “Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies” seeks to hire an

Academic Language Editor: English language editing

(50%)

from March 1, 2023 onward and initially for a fixed term until 31.12.2025.

The post is part of the Publication Management unit, which oversees the scholarly publications in the Cluster’s
own book series. The Cluster offers language editing services to our international researchers in order to
ensure the quality of our publications.

Your tasks:editing complex scholarly texts from a wide range of backgrounds in the arts and

social sciences (including history, sociology, linguistics and cultural studies,
theology, law, archaeology and art history),

improving the quality of language in academic manuscripts authored by EAL
speakers,

reviewing grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, flow and style,
giving due regard to American, British and other World Englishes,
prioritizing clarity and readability for an international audience of scholars
exploring the theoretical foundations “strong asymmetrical dependency” and how

it relates to language,
further developing processes of work and communication in the editorial office

(e.g. development of a terminology database).

Your profile:a completed master’s degree or equivalent, or comparable professional

English-language proficiency at native-speaker level,
knowledge of German; knowledge of one or more other language(s) is an asset
at least two years’ experience in academic language editing,
experience in publishing and research,
awareness of global variants of English beyond British and American Englishes,

other disciplines and modes of research,
a willingness to engage with the theoretical foundations of “strong asymmetrical

dependency”
the ability to work independently and as part of a team
strong time management skills
Familiarity with style guides (such as The Chicago Manual of Style) is an asset.
dealing with different text forms and addressees.
You communicate well and effectively in German and English.
