The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.
- Head of the "Systems" division within the Computing and Data Centre (M/F/d)

**Background**
The data centre with the areas "Systems", "Data" and "High Performance Computing" offers a variety of services to support the core tasks of the AWI. To this end, it also works in projects and collaborations with Helmholtz Centres and other national and international partners. The cross-location operation of essential components of the data center infrastructure (network, server and storage systems, cloud services, support of the end devices and operation of the central helpdesk) are in the "Systems" area.

The management of the Systems division bears responsibility for the results of technical IT service management, i.e. for the planning, construction and operation of IT systems and their support, including long-term development planning at all German locations of AWI. It supports site management at the Bremerhaven location and the branch offices and is the technical authority in IT management at all other German and international locations. The divisional managers are part of the data center management team and report to the management of the data center.

**Tasks**

**Personnel responsibility in the organizational units of the Systems division**
- Disciplinary management of the employees assigned to the area (M/F/d) (currently approx. 40 employees (M/F/d) in 4 groups, each with its own technical management)
- Conducting development discussions with employees (M/F/d)
- Measures for personnel development, retention and recruitment
- Support of the further professionalization of the area as well as the networking / dovetailing of tasks with other areas of the data center

**Strategic-technical responsibility**
- Development of a systematic IT service management taking into account the specific needs of the research areas as well as standardization and documentation of processes and systems
- Further development and implementation of the technological IT strategy (AWI and Helmholtz), also taking into account sustainability aspects
- Decision-making authority in fundamental questions of a general and trend-setting nature for the area of "Systems“
- Advising the RZ management and the Board of Directors on strategic issues and preparing decision-making recommendations for committees
- Representation of the data centre in regional (e.g. partner universities) and national networks (e.g. KODA and ZKI)
- Support of the strategic development of cross-departmental processes of administration and science, in particular administrative IT, finance department, controlling, project processing
- Close cooperation / coordination with the site managers (M/F/d) of the AWI
- Training and trend scouting

**Budget responsibility for the "Systems" area**
- Planning and control of budgets in the organizational units of the division
- Cooperation with finance department / controll

**Requirements**:

- Master's degree in informatics or comparable technical area of study; Ph.D. desired
- Qualified leadership experience and enjoyment of leadership responsibility
- Very good knowledge in dealing with data center and IT system solutions as well as strong willingness to continuously acquire up-to-date knowledge and a comprehensive overview in the IT sector
- Good knowledge of IT security and IT governance
- Strong ability to work conceptually and analytically and to solve complex queries
- Independent and systematic working approach, planning skills and goal orientation
- High level of commitment and initiative, flexibility and ability to work under pressure
- Very good communication and teamwork skills, combined with a strong sense of responsibility for the entire work area
- Confident appearance at internal and external meetings
- Basic commercial and controlling skills
- Very good written and spoken German and English language skills
- Willingness to participate in (inter)national workshops and to work in inter-regional working groups
