**Description of the project**:
The project will explore the impact of chronic infection on B cell development in the bone marrow and is a joint project between the BNITM and the Forschungszentrum Borstel (FZB), with supervision by Dr. Christine Hopp, a junior group leader specializing in B cells in malaria at the BNITM, and Dr. Bianca Schneider, a group leader and expert on the mouse model of _Mycobacterium tuberculosis_ at the FZB.

The PhD student will work on an exciting novel research area: host-pathogen interactions in the bone marrow, with a specific focus on the impact of chronic murine _Plasmodium_ or _Mycobacterium_ infection on the maturation of pathogen-specific B cells. The work will employ mouse models for both infections, using cutting-edge techniques, such as B cell receptor repertoire sequencing, confocal microscopy of the bone marrow, and antigen-specific B cell probes.

The PhD is embedded within the framework of the **Leibniz Center Infection (LCI) **Graduate School. The LCI is a strategic alliance of the three North German Leibniz Institutes: the BNITM, the FZB and the Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV). The LCI focuses on global infections and aims to connect the complementary research of the three Leibniz institutes: tropical and emerging infections at BNITM, bacterial infections of the lung at the FZB and viral diseases at the LIV.

**Your Profile**:

- Diploma/master's degree or equivalent in life sciences
- Background in immunology
- Interest in infection biology and parasitology
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
- Ability to work independently and to develop creative work

Starting date is flexible in summer/fall 2023. The position is initially limited to 3 years and according to the rules of the public service under the TV-AVH (collective agreement of the “Arbeitsrechtliche Vereinigung Hamburg“).
