- InstitutionFaculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Earth System Sciences, Meteorological Institute
Salary levelEGR. 13 TV-L
Start date01.05.2024, fixed until 30.04.2027 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).
Application deadline27.03.2024
Scope of workpart-time
Weekly hours66,67 % of standard work hours per weekThe Environmental Wind Tunnel Laboratory operates dedicated boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) facilities for physical modeling of near-ground atmospheric boundary layer flows. In the large BLWT facility, a systematic series of experiments will be carried out within the scope of the joint research project “EXPO-URB”. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. It aims for the further improvement and quantitative validation of micro-scale atmospheric dispersion models used in the context of urban air pollution protection and air quality management. Project partners are GeoSphere Austria Vienna, TU Graz and CNR-ISAC in Torino. EWTL is tasked to provide in close cooperation with the research partners dedicated high quality reference data by following the most recent standard BLWT modeling, representing mean and transient dispersion from local emission sources in an urban environment.

**Responsibilities**:
In the period from 01.05.2024 until 30.06.2026 duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

In the period from 01.07.2026 until 30.04.2027 research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

Under supervision of experienced staff, the jobholder is expected to plan and implement systematic wind tunnel measurements in the large BLWT facility “Wotan” and will be responsible for
- documenting experiments,
- post-processing and systematic analysis of measured data with existing software and
- conditioning of results for integration in a new reference data pool

The jobholder is expected to participate actively in regular project meetings and workshops (in person and via videoconference), present her/his results during project meetings and possibly publish new research results at national/international conferences in the field of environmental meteorology/modeling.

Teaching of 2,5 hours per week during teaching times in the period from 01.07.2026 until 30.04.2027.

**Profile**:
A university degree in a relevant field.

Applicants are expected to be highly motivated and able to work in a small team consisting of research scientists and technicians. Beneficial is a basic knowledge of
- fluid mechanics, environmental aerodynamics, meteorology or
- atmospheric physics or
- atmospheric dispersion modeling in the lower atmospheric boundary layer or
- physical geography
- (applied) wind tunnel modeling
- wind tunnel measurement technology
- processing/handling of large amounts of data

We offer
- Reliable remuneration based on wage agreements
- Continuing education opportunities
- University pensions
- Attractive location
- Flexible working hours
- Work-life balance opportunities
- Health management
- Educational leave
