Climate change and similar human-induced environmental stressors threaten local and global biodiversity. To mitigate these effects, we need a general understanding of the drivers of coexistence and biodiversity. Currently, much of this understanding stems from simplistic community models with only two species. We therefore know little about how and why biodiversity will decline and how we can act best to prevent this.

In this project you will aim to expand and generalize our understanding of species coexistence. Specifically, you will investigate and simulate well-known ecological models, with the focus of understanding when species coexist and when they do not. You will analyse these models with the most recent developments in the field (modern coexistence theory) and potentially develop your own methods as well. Depending on your preferences, these models may either be more general or more realistic and based on empirical data.

You will be supervised by Dr. Jürg Spaak, and collaborate with Dr. György Barabas as well as Dr. Nadav Shnerb.

**Your area of responsibility**:

- Mathematical analysis of simple ecological models to understand the drivers of coexistence and non-coexistence
- Simulation of simple to moderately complex ecological models to investigate the coexistence of ecological communities
- Writing up of results and publishing these in international journals

**Your requirements profile**:

- Experience in programming or willingness to learn to program, preferrably in R or Python
- Strong quantitative background with interest in biologica/ecological questions (or vice versa)
