Internship: Hardware Development

Stuttgart, Deutschland IBM Vollzeit

Introduction

At IBM, work is more than a job - it’s a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you’ve never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world’s most challenging problems? If so, let’s talk.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Are you interested in system design, computer architecture or processor development?

Then this is the place to be

We offer a variety of exciting projects for interns or working students in all of our hardware development teams:

- Processor Logic Design
- Processor Verification
- Processor Physical Design
- EDA Tools Development
- System, Board and Packaging Design
- Wafer and Module Test & Characterization

Please chose any topic from the list below or just let us know your area of interest and we try our best to match your preferences.

Your Team:
IBM’s hardware development team in Boeblingen creates - together with our partner labs in the USA, Israel and India - the most powerful computer systems in the world. We use modern development methods and continuously seek improvements of our development processes. Agile methods and design thinking are common practice in our projects.

Selection of possible topics:
Topic 1: EDA Tools Development

Modern microprocessors feature billions of transistors. Powerful design tools are required to cope with the complexity and are indispensable for our success. Join our EDA team and develop tools to analyze and optimize the physical design of microprocessors. Modern AI techniques, clever optimization algorithms or smart GUIs can push the productivity of the design teams to the next level. There are ample opportunities for your internship, e.g.
- Develop a Python script that reads design data from a database, creates visual representations of the data, analyses the complex data and highlights critical outliers

Topic 2: Automation in Physical Design

Automation is king in the Physical Design space where the development engineers deal with the constantly increasing complexity of new semiconductor technologies and advancing processor architectures. We continuously improve our design flows and automation, e.g. by adopting modern concepts from software development like CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery). Join the team and discover the fascinating world of Physical Design. There are many topics you could work on, e.g. develop scripts to automate steps in the release process of the Physical Design team and integrate them in the CI/CD pipeline.

Topic 3: Development of a Language Server for a Hardware Description Language

The Language Server Protocol (LSP) is an open protocol supported by many modern source code editors to support features like syntax highlighting, auto completion, etc. IBM’s processor development team uses a Hardware Description Language (HDL) that is similar to VHDL but much more compact. In this internship, you will develop an extensible a language server with basic capabilities like syntax highlighting for our HDL. A programming language of choice can be used for the implementation.

Topic 4: Tools Development for Processor Reliability Analysis

IBM Z processors - the Z stands for “zero downtime” - are the most reliable processors in the industry. Reliability aspects must be considered at all levels from the semiconductor technology over the processor architecture to the operating system. We are continuously improving our methods and tools for the reliability analysis of our next microprocessor generations. In this internship, you will learn about design techniques to improve the processor’s reliability and implement tools to analyse the reliability of different processor microarchitectures, e.g.
- Develop a Python script that reads design data from a database and implements a novel reliability analysis method
- Develop a new reliability analysis algorithm based on simulations of real workloads in a chip simulation environment

Topic 5: Trek5 Prototype Development

IBM's high end microprocessors have a very high focus on Reliability, Availability and Servicability (RAS) as well as security features to prevent unwanted accesses or modifications to the data within the processor. These features often implement sophisticated protocols or complex sequences of interactions that are difficult to verify in classical simulation environments with random stimuli. Therefore, a method based on graphs is used to generate stimuli that are tailored to the verification of complex sequences. A prototype has been developed with the Breker Trek5 tool that supports the Portable Stimulus Standard (PPS). This prototype should now be integrated in our C++-based processor verification environment.

Topic 6: Enable a Hardware Verification Workflow using Open Source Frameworks

The development of microprocessors entails t
