The Hertie School Data Science Lab works on a variety of projects in data science to tackle major societal problems. Core research areas involve experimental survey methods, causal inference, natural language processing, climate change and AI. Our Research Consulting team provides resources and advice on methodological and technical issues for graduate students and researchers. We also organise regular data science events and meetups to help enrich campus life at the Hertie School and contribute to the academic, start-up and industrial dialogues of Berlin.

We seek to fill the following position:
**Postdoctoral Researcher - Data Science Lab (gn)**

full-time (40 hours per week). The contract shall commence as of 01 September, 2023 and will be limited for three years.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and growth of the Data Science Lab and the Master of Data Science and Public Policy (MDS) programme at the Hertie School. As a Postdoctoral scholar, you will implement your own research agenda leveraging computational and statistical methods and deliver tailored technical courses for the MDS.

Your tasks:

- Conduct independent research at the intersection of data science and public policy with a focus on causal inference, computational methods, machine learning, and/or statistics;
- Collaborate with our faculty and Data Science Lab members on research projects;
- Publish research findings in reputable academic journals and present at conferences and workshops;
- Contribute to grant proposal writing and seek external funding opportunities;
- Mentor and supervise graduate students working on related research projects;
- Deliver training in the School’s MSc Data Science for Public Policy programme (one course per semester).

Your profile:

- A PhD degree (or nearing completion) in computer science, data science, political science, computational social science or a related discipline in the social and behavioral sciences.
- Evidence of high-quality publications in respected and relevant conference proceedings or journals;
- A research agenda and interest in the intersection of public policy and data science;
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and/or R;
- Evidence of English proficiency at an advanced level;
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly in writing and verbally;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team;
- Good organisational and interpersonal skills;
- Interest and/or experience in large scale data engineering projects.
