You have completed a university degree /master's or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automation technology, or computer science and achieved very good results. You have a strong foundation in the field of control and automation engineering and are eager to develop your knowledge in this area further. Being involved in projects and teaching activities is an attractive challenge for you.
Ideally, you have already gained programming experience with Matlab/Simulink, Python, C++, or similar in a control engineering context. You are able to develop novel solutions for challenging technical problems in a team, speak fluent German, and have a good knowledge of English.
**Your Duties and Responsibilities**:
As part of the "Mobility" working group, you will research the automation of a wide variety of vehicles: on the road, on water, on rails, or in the air. Research focuses on the modeling of vehicle dynamics, the planning of safe and efficient trajectories, and trajectory tracking by the vehicle using modern control methods.
Within the scope of a unique project, the autonomous operation of a Baltic Sea car ferry is being experimentally realized in cooperation with partner institutions. The highly dynamic environment (wind, waves, swimmers, floats, sailors) requires a high maturity of all developed algorithms. The aim of your work is to investigate a trajectory planning and control concept taking into account currents, the maneuverability of the ferry, as well as dynamic and static obstacles. In doing so, the ferry is to be operated as energy-efficiently as possible. In addition, you will support the retrofitting of the ferry and test and validate your approaches. The experimental testing will take place at regular intervals in the ferry's real operating area in the Baltic Sea. This way, you will make a methodological and practical contribution to developing sustainable mobility concepts and BMWK’s vision of a climate-neutral ship.
The IRT also develops methods for state estimation, which enables close cooperation within our scientific team. Regarding the methodology, you can set your personal priorities based on existing approaches. The implementation of dynamic and safety-relevant evasive maneuvers is particularly exciting. At IRT, scientists with many years of experience in maritime automation projects and with diverse methodological expertise will support you. You will share your scientific results with the community at international conferences and in scientific journals. For these work topics, we are looking for a dedicated staff member at the earliest possible date.
