**Your team**
- You will be part of the Directorate General Research (DG/R), which carries out and coordinates economic research on monetary policy, financial stability and the ECB’s banking supervision and regulatory activities. In your role as a Student Research Assistant Trainee, you will support DG/R’s Senior Management team in their economic research and policy analysis. The work spans a broad range of research topics including:

- banking and finance, through the analysis of micro-data on financial intermediaries and firms;
- household finance, especially analyses based on the Household Finance and Consumption Survey, often in cooperation with national central banks through the Household Finance and Consumption Network;
- macroeconomic consequences of price-setting, by compiling and analysing large store-level and household-level scanner and web-scraped panel datasets and developing and solving general equilibrium models.

**Your role**
- As a Student Research Assistant Trainee, you will:

- construct and maintain monetary, financial and economic databases;
- present data in conjunction with basic economic and statistical analysis;
- develop mathematical, statistical and econometric procedures for research projects;
- support and maintain software tools;
- help to maintain internet and intranet systems within DG/R.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to work closely with our economists and management. You will support them in academic research projects and work of an operational nature, such as the preparation of policy-related notes for the ECB’s Executive Board. This will enable you to develop your analytical skills and gain insight into the ECB’s research activities and policymaking processes.

The programme will also expose you to new ideas and stimuli that will provide a useful foundation for your future career and/or postgraduate studies. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

**Qualifications, experience and skills**
- Essential:

- for a traineeship paid at €1,940 a master’s degree and at least two years of PhD studies in economics, statistics, finance, computer science, mathematics or a related field;
- for a traineeship paid at €1,070 a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, statistics, finance, computer science, mathematics or a related field;
- an excellent command of Stata and/or R;
- familiarity with one or more of the following databases/data providers: Bloomberg/Eikon, Thomson Reuters Datastream, Haver Analytics, Bureau van Dijk banking data (BankFocus), Bureau van Dijk firm-level data (Orbis), Fitch Connect/FactSet, SNL Financial, Dealogic, large micro price datasets, or the ECB Household Finance and Consumption Survey;
- a very good knowledge of spreadsheet and database software such as Microsoft Excel, SQL, Microsoft Access and FAME (including an ability to use Excel’s graphing, pivot table and summary statistics functions);
- a good knowledge of the MS Office package;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

- for a traineeship paid at €1,070 a master’s degree (or at least one complete year of studies towards a master’s degree) in economics, statistics, finance, computer science, mathematics or a related field;
- knowledge of other high-level programming languages such as MATLAB or Python;
- experience with using cloud-based computing environments such as Hadoop or Cloudera;
- familiarity with macroeconomic and financial statistics as presented in international databases (e.g. those of the ECB (the Statistical Data Warehouse), Eurostat, the Bank for International Settlements, the International Monetary Fund, International Financial Statistics).
