**C**reating Knowledge. Since 1502: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range of

At the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Faculty of Philosophy I, Institute for Sociology, Chair for
opportunity and limited to three years:
**Research Associate on Environment and Society (f-m-d)**
in part-time (65%).
Remuneration is applied up to pay group 13 TV-L, depending on the assignment of duties and fulfilment of
personal requirements.
**Tasks**:
- Contribute to research at the Chair for Environmental Sociology that aims to understand how social change
(in individuals, communities, institutions) relates to change in the environment, biodiversity, and nature.
- Advance the particular focus of the Chair that explores, tests, develops intervention methods (e.g., survey and
field experiments, serious games, deliberative and creative methods) with focus on what can improve
sustainability and equitability in social-ecological systems and human-environment relations.

- Support or lead teaching of a course on one of the related topics and in coordination with the colleagues at
the Institute for Sociology (2 SWS).
- Develop own and Chair’s national and international network in environmental social sciences; contribute to
publications, including in peer-reviewed academic journals, potentially as part of own doctoral research.
- Organisational and content-related support at meetings, conferences and workshops; preparation of project
proposals; and administrative self-administration in teaching, research and networking.
- The possibility of further academic qualification is given (completion of a doctorate).
**Requirements**:
- A Master’s degree in Environmental Social Sciences, which can include Behavioural and/or Institutional
Economics, Sociology, Political Sciences, Resource Management, Development Studies, International
Relations/Studies or a related field with focus on social-environmental issues.
- Strong interest in the topics of environment and justice on the one hand, and societal change from individual
to institutional levels, on the other hand.
- Research and methodological skills in investigating topics related to environmental sociology (e.g.,
experiences in developing, conducting and analysing interviews and/or surveys with various actors, as well as
skills in literature reviews or comparative analyses) are a strong asset. Yet opportunities will be explored to

- Experience in research, as well as teaching, particularly on topics at the intersection between environment
and society, is an asset.
- Motivation to work independently and in a team with a high degree of creativity and personal initiative.
- Strong diplomacy and communication skills in English, particularly to maintain relations in international
networks. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
